The 1967 Gibson LGO is a smaller-bodied, mid-range acoustic guitar from the iconic Gibson company, which was known for producing some of the finest guitars of the era.

When this guitar came to us, it was in rough shape. These guitars originally came with a plastic bridge. Someone had replaced that bridge with a wooden one, but they didn't exactly do a stellar job. It was pulling up and in need of replacement. The guitar also had a couple of loose braces and some other problems. The original pickguard was long gone, the finish was ashy, and between the bridge and the braces, it had a pretty good belly going in the top. In short, it was a mess.

In spite of all this, you could tell there was still a lot of soul left in this sweet little guitar. The first thing we did was clean it up and repair the braces. Great care was taken to reuse all of the original bracing. Once that was done, we took off the old bridge. With the bridge off, we agreed that the solid spruce top deserved some love. It was carefully sanded and prepped to go in the spray booth. Our paint guy really took a liking to the little gem. He was VERY careful to retain the original binding. He then gave it an absolutely BEAUTIFUL antique sunburst finish. We decided to keep the back, sides, and headstock the same as when it came in, because we believe the little dents and scratches tell part of the story of this guitar.

Next up, one of our luthiers custom hand crafted a new rosewood bridge for this beauty. Great care was taken in the placement of the saddle to make sure intonation needs were spot on. We topped it all off with a (simulated) tortoise shell pick guard to both match and highlight the original binding.

The end result is a gorgeous restoration of an under-sung Gibson classic. The look is going to turn heads. The playability is like butter. The sound is warm and balanced with a hint of brightness that only comes from an aged solid spruce top. Seriously, at nearly 60 years old, this is an instant classic that you will be proud to pass down to your future generations (or hang on to as an investment because they ain't making any more like this one). There is something magical that happens to wood as it ages, and you can hear and feel that magic in this guitar.

This guitar isn't going to stick around long. Get it now, while you can!

Here’s a breakdown of its features and history:

  • The LGO is a small-body guitar, with a 14-1/2" wide lower bout, making it a more compact option compared to full-sized dreadnoughts or jumbos.

  • This size made it popular for players seeking something more portable and comfortable for fingerpicking, or for those who simply preferred a smaller soundboard.

  • The body is made with solid mahogany back and sides, and a solid spruce top, which is a common and highly regarded combination for its balance and warmth in tone.

  • The sound of the LGO is often described as warm, balanced, and bright, thanks to the spruce top and mahogany construction.

  • Being a smaller guitar, it has a more focused, intimate tone compared to larger, boomy dreadnoughts.

  • It's known for its clear midrange and is often favored for fingerstyle and light strumming.

  • The LGO features a mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard and a 1-5/8" nut width, making it comfortable for many players.

  • The neck profile was relatively slim for its time, which made it quite playable, especially for folk and fingerstyle players.

  • The LGO was part of Gibson’s more affordable lineup in the 1960s, which made it more accessible to a wider audience.

  • While not as famous as larger models like the J-45 or Hummingbird, it is still a well-respected and solid instrument for its size and price point.

  • Because it was produced for a shorter period and was less well-known than other Gibson models, finding a well-preserved 1967 LGO today is considered a bit of a rarity among vintage acoustic guitars.

  • The 1967 Gibson LGO appeals to those who want a vintage instrument with classic Gibson craftsmanship but in a smaller, more manageable form.

  • It’s a great choice for fingerstyle players, singer-songwriters, and anyone looking for a guitar with a strong vintage vibe but without the size of a larger model.
